The progression of Lowrance is noteworthy. The touch screen has always been fun but it widens the ease of using the gadget. Here in Gen 3, Lowrance has taken it to another level by adding back keypads too. With the wet hand, it may be problematic to use the touch screen, so those buttons will provide you the ultimate ease while you are on the water.
The Gen 3 comprises 7, 9 and 12-inch screens. The previous Gen 2 was a seven-inch unit. It also performed well in all types of fishing locations. But the Gen 3 made it even better with more viewable screen area. The display is the high definition with great detail, brighter and multi-touch. This featured LED backlight and a pixel of 800 x 480 offering high-quality image even under the direct sunlight.
One significant change of this unit from its previous model is the quick access to the main features including the wireless connectivity and Autopilot feature. But the changes are just some plain improvements. The menus that previously slide out are now can be up and down. The user of the Gen 2 will have a short learning curve.
The Gen 3 series from Lowrance has come up with camera connectivity. That is surely an excellent feature. It will allow you to turn your fish finder into a surveillance device. This unit also provides two micro-SD card slots that give you the option to use one for saving sonar recording and waypoints and another for mapping. It can store up to 5000 waypoints and 200 routes. A single Ethernet port is also there.
This 3rd Gen fish finder came with built-in CHIRP sonar and broadband Structure Scan to provide better target separation, noise cancellation and detailed structure and fish display. Those technologies give extra clarity to mark bait fish at higher speed. The display allows split screen view of both CHIRP sonar and Structure Scan via the Down Scan edge. If you want traditional sonar, Down Scan, Side Scan all in one box, then Gen 3 is the unit you are looking for. The combination of sonar/Down Scan/Side Scan will let you no stone left unturned.
Unlike any top rated fish finders, HDS-7 Gen 3 also functioned with Fish ID, Flasher sonar, Bottom Lock and Split zoom. Fish ID displays the fish in fish icons in different sizes. That helps to interpret the sonar readings easily. The Flasher function is best used in ice fishing for its abstract sonar view. Spit zoom enables you to magnify any portion of the sonar view and let you see in the split screen mood. Bottom lock is a feature which mainly targets the bottom exclusively and assists in targeting any fish close to the bottom structure.
The cool unit is equipped with 10Hz internal GPS antenna with ultra-high sensitivity WAAS/ EGNOS/ MSAS corrections that ensures excellent accuracy. However, for MSAS correction you will need an additional antenna.
The HDS Gen 3 offers to stay connected wirelessly with its integrated Wi-Fi, and Lowrance GoFree cloud-enabled connectivity. You can instantly download Insight Genesis updates and cartography.

Potential concerns to consider:
It is hard to find any drawbacks of this unit since it is an advance and top rated fish finder. However, for its advanced features and technological aspect, some users find it above the difficulty level in the beginning. It just takes some time to be used to.
In the final verdict, the Lowrance HDS 7 GEN 3 could be considered as one of the best fish finder and GPS combo for its feature and performance. If you are an intermediate or pro level angler and you don’t pay heed to the budget rather than the real performance than it could be a good choice to consider!!
